2010 Marie Henderson Scholarship

sponsored by the

Greater Philadelphia Suzuki Association

for

Suzuki Student Summer Institutes

Deadline: Teachers submit student recommendations by March 1, 2010

Eligibility – students must study with a teacher who is currently a member of the Greater Philadelphia Suzuki Association.  GPSA teachers are asked only to recommend students who have a financial need that would otherwise prohibit them from attending a summer institute.

Only students applying for their first institute experience will be considered.  Students may only be awarded this scholarship once.

Scholarships are awarded in the amount of up to 100% of tuition for one child per family.  If a second child (sibling) in the family applies, a scholarship may be awarded in the amount of up to 60% of the tuition.  No more than two children per family will be considered. Scholarships are for tuition only and do not include room & board, transportation, or other fees.

A copy of the institute brochure or other verification of costs must accompany this application.

All students selected to receive a scholarship are asked to write a short letter about their experience at the summer institute.  The letter will be published our  Area-Wide Recital program, and students will also be required to attend an Area-Wide Recital to speak or play.

PURPOSE

This GPSA teacher scholarship commemorates the life and work of our long-time colleague, Christine Hayakawa.  We honor her memory by offering assistance to teachers to further their training in the Suzuki Method.

Chris’ dedication to Suzuki philosophy and her life-long commitment to excellence in teaching remain a constant source of inspiration for us all.

·        Any GPSA member teacher who receives a scholarship will be required to participate on a GPSA committee the following year.

·        Applicants must be members of GPSA from September 1 of the current membership year.

·        The amount awarded will be for full tuition only.

·        The number of teachers selected will be based on available funds.

·        The selected teacher training must be presented by SAA teacher trainers or Matsumoto graduates.

·        The introductory ECC course will be included only when in conjunction with the Book 1 unit.

The application for a scholarship will include:

1)    Resume – number of years of instrumental study; music degrees, etc.

2)    500-word essay detailing your commitment to teaching and anything else you want the committee to know regarding your worthiness for this GPSA scholarship.

3)    Information on training being sought: Location, teacher (SAA-approved or Matsumoto graduate) and SAA unit.

4)    A performance video/DVD may be requested after application at the discretion of the committee.  If the applicant has not met SAA requirements for training, the scholarship may be denied.  This way, the standards for the scholarship are the same as those for the workshop.

We encourage applicants to take their training at a Suzuki institute.  This format offers teachers the opportunity to observe a wide range of highly qualified teachers, as well as many excellent students in master classes and performances.
